    Mario Berberan-Santos graduated in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST, Technical University of Lisbon) in 1984. After a brief stay at the National Research Council of Canada (Ottawa) with A. Szabo, he received his Ph. D. in Chemistry from IST (M. Prieto) in 1989. He was a post-doctoral Fellow with B. Valeur at Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (Paris, France), and at Laboratoire pour l'Utilisation du Rayonnement Electromagnétique (LURE, Univ. Paris-Sud, Orsay, France) in 1990-91. In 1997 he completed his Habilitation (Agregação) in Chemistry at IST. He was Invited Full Professor at the École Normale Supérieure de Cachan (France) in 1998, 2002 and 2005. He was Secretary-General of the Portuguese Chemical Society (Sociedade Portuguesa de Química) in 2001-2004. He is (since 2003) member of the Permanent Steering Committee of the MAF Conferences.  He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2004, and member of the International Academy of Mathematical Chemistry in 2012. Prize "Estímulo à Excelência" (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal) in 2006-07. He is member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of

   

 
He was President of the Portuguese Chemical Society (Sociedade Portuguesa de Química, 2010-2013), and is President of Centro de Quimica-Fisica Molecular (IST) (2012-2016).

    Mario Berberan-Santos has carried out theoretical and experimental work on the structure of nano and supramolecular systems, on the photophysics of molecular probes, fluorescence polarization, radiative and nonradiative (FRET) electronic energy transfer and transport, on the kinetics of diffusion-influenced processes, and on the photophysics of fullerenes and derivatives. Current interests include the luminescence of fullerenes and related nanostructured systems, as well as luminescence relaxation and other kinetic processes, including applications such as sensing and lighting. He is currently responsible for research projects «New isotope effects in fluorescence and phosphorescence» (FCT, 2012-2015) and for IST's participation in the EU project SAFUEL (FP7, 2012-2015).
