The sol-gel chemical versatility makes new hybrid materials possible. Norberta de Pinho and I developed a novel hybrid cellulose acetate-silica membrane (monophasic material) synthesized through sol-gel reactions taking place within the casting solution. Copolymerization between inorganic phases’ precursors and polymeric molecules, grants the establishment of strong (covalent or ionic) chemical bonds between inorganic and organic moieties.
