Boarding House in Graz, Austria

Algorithmic Design Tool: Grasshopper

The task of designing a boarding house for musicians, that should also include wellness and public spaces such a restaurant and a multifunctional event space, asks for a solution, which is both straight in concept and extraordinarily complex in its appearance. The ongoing movement, which will happen in this house is represented by a meander-like wooden structure that flows in and out of the building and designs the outside as well as the inside. Breaking through the glass facade, the wood meanders create a contrast to the simple and straight construction of the building itself.

When approaching the building, one is mesmerized by the free form of the wooden laminas which invite those passing by to enter the building on the ground floor where the restaurant is located. On the upper apartment floors they create a feeling of privacy and define specific views of the surrounding area. The bearing structure follows an orthogonal grid, which organizes the apartments and the interior, giving the necessary rooms enough and usable space.

The intended interruption of the grid makes visitors think about how the interior works and represents the very different movements that will take place inside the house. Furthermore it can be associated to a good piece of music that breaks through gridlocked thoughts, as the laminas also break into apartments, public areas and the concert hall at certain points.

It is important that the meander laminas do not disturb the structure itself, but flow in and out of it creating additional value for the in- and outside space. Therefore a construction distance of at least 1m was chosen, giving the gaps the chance to become windows, doors and passages where they are needed. The meander-like flowing of the wooden laminas gives the visitor the opportunity not only to see the free structure, but also the possibility to touch and use it - as seating spots, bar balconies or mere visual element.
