She is a member of the Environmental and EcoProcess Engineering Research Group of the Center for Biological and Chemical Engineering (CEBQ).
The research interests of Gabriela Bernardo-Gil are in the areas of Distillation and Extraction, including modelling and simulation.
She has conducted research on phase equilibrium (VLLE), plate efficiencies on Oldershaw columns, efficiencies of structured packings, modelling and simulation of batch distillation and control. The validation of models for distillation has been made with components of pine resin and derivatives.
She is researching on the extraction of natural products, namely supercritical and nearcritical extraction of edible oils; and extraction of flavours, antioxidants and pigments from plant material for the food and cosmetic industries. She is also using steam distillation, Clevenger distillation and solvent extraction (Soxhlet) to compare the results in terms of yields and composition of the extracts.
She also has some interests on the extraction of alkaloids and lipids from lupine and on the supercritical extraction of PCBs and DDT from s
