Suppose that many parallel uniform rays impinge on the "lens" with the form of a certain Gauss distribution, with given μ and σ (50.1 and 0.18, in the example).  Upon interception, the rays are vertically deflected.  Notice the Gaussian density of these rays, as suggested by the density curve also shown.
