Research Activities

Domain A : Process System Engineering

A.1) Several tools, such as GateCycle and  gPROMS are used to model the integrated dynamic systems. A thermal re-crystallization process integrated with a Cogeneration System is used as case study.

A.2. Process Integration: Energy Process Integration is applied to several industrial Processes by using the Pinch Analysis. Mass Exchange networks is applied to obtain alternative process structures with the use of  several strategies, such as reuse, regeneration and recycle. AquoMin is a tool that has been developed to reduce the industrial effluents using that strategy.

A.3) Optimal utility systems synthesis using multi-objective functions including total cost and environmental concerns. A MILP model solved by decompositions algorithm.

A.4) The scheduling and planning of discontinuous chemical processes are model by RTN and other formulation. Several case studies were used, such as, pulp digesters, ink pellets formulation, oil derivatives pipeline transport and tank farm management.

A.5) Process Analysis and new Design Strategies were developed by calculating several mass and energy indicators. The Safety, Environmental and Social issues were also incorporated in the studies to obtain the best Sustainable Process Design.

Domain B : Thermodynamics of Supercritical Fluids

B.1) Using a synthetic method the phase diagrams were obtain by visual observation of bubble and dew points.

B.2) Different experimental conditions were tested using several methods  (RESS, GAS/SAS, PGSS)  to obtain  nano or/and  micro particle  for pharmaceutical pure substances and mixtures using supercritical CO2 or N2.

B.3) Based on first principles equations a modelling for PGSS and SAS techniques was developed using atomisation and/or crystallization theories inside the nozzle and exit.
