A investigação científica de Teresa Reis situa-se na área dos processos de separação e tratamento de efluentes. Os trabalhos até aqui desenvolvidos estão relacionados com a aplicação da tecnologia das Membranas Líquidas Emulsionadas (MLE) a soluções aquosas contaminadas com metais pesados e compostos fenólicos. No âmbito do seu doutoramento, estudou a extracção de zinco de soluções em meio de sulfatos com o ácido bis(2-etilhexil)tiofosfórico. O seu trabalho incidiu também na modelação da permeação de zinco, quer em reactor descontínuo, quer em coluna agitada a nível contínuo.

Actualmente a investigação de Teresa Reis centra-se na área da remoção/recuperação de solutos (ex.: zinco, cobre, fenol) de soluções aquosas por recurso à Extracção Líquido-Líquido convencional e Extracção por Solventes Não-Dispersiva (ESND) utilizando contactores de membranas com fibras ocas.
