Professor of Chemistry at  IST-TUL, Antonio Maçanita leads the Group 4B for Fast Kinetics at  CQE. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from CQE (1981), after his research on the kinetics of excited-state electron transfer with aromatic esters with Sílvia B. Costa.

He then spent two years with Klaas A. Zachariasse at the MPI für Biophysikalische Chemie (Göttingen), with fellowships of the AvH Foundation (1981-1982) and MP Society (1982-1983), where he carried out research on intramolecular excimer formation kinetics. Back to the IST-TUL (1984), he lectured Chemistry and was latter appointed Professor in Chemistry (1998).

From 1989 to 2001 he headed the Photochemistry Unit of the ITQB, where he developed research on the kinetics of excited-state processes occurring in photosensitizers, natural food dyes and protein folding. Since 2002, at the CQE, his research is mainly focused on photoactive molecular materials.
