Text Box: On science and other worlds

UCLA scientists have found that for computer-savvy middle-aged and older adults, searching the Internet triggers key centers in the brain that control decision-making and complex reasoning. The findings demonstrate that Web search activity may help stimulate and possibly improve brain function.

ELECTRIC THETER CONCEPT

[Webpage credits: Dan Holland, NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center]

How it works:

NASA expects to reduce costs in propellant with this concept introduced by Les Johnson. A long theter is attached to an orbiting spacecraft, acting like an electric circuit. An electric current is sent through the wire loop that closes at the charged gas existing at the ionosphere. This curent in the presence of the Earth magnetic field result in a force that can be used to pull or push a spacecraft as a brake or booster.

In the past the “anomalies” were the  starters that trigger new theoretical progress. The anomaly of the black-body lead physicists to modify their vision of  Nature, creating Quantum Mechanics. Einstein inventivity was trigered by the observations of a French astronome, Urban Le Verrier in 1859, showing that the predictions made by the theory of gravitation made by Newton (that the planets describes an ellipse) were not true for Mercury. In fact, the ellipse of Mercury falls down faster than predicted by an amount of 38’ (seconds) of arc each century!  Are we facing the same situation with the Pioneer’s anomaly?

Text Box: Are fundamental constants variable?

The constant “mu” representing the ratio of electron mass over proton mass may well be variable. Comparing measures done in laboratory with the absorption spectra of distant insterstellar clouds, the constant “mu” reveals to be about 0.002% smaller today than 12 billions (1 000 000 000) years before. Nowadays its value is 1836.15267261

This finding comes from researches done by Patrick Petijean. His original paper can be read here.

Text Box: STRING THEORY

Gabrielle Veneziano discovered accidentally in 1968 that Leonhard Euler’s beta function seems to describes the strong nuclear force.

The beta function has this name because it is a function of the binomiale distribution. It can be related to the gamma function as

In 1969, while looking for a function that fulfills the fundamental postulates for the scattering amplitudes of elementary particles in strong interaction, Veneziano found that Euler’s beta function was a good choice. Although Veneziano was looking for a theory of strong interactions, it was thorugh this first step that string theory initiated.

Text Box: QUANTUM MECHANICS AND INFORMATION THEORY

At the end of the 1980’s it appears one innovative idea, to use the information to understand Quantum Mechanics, instead of the other usual way, to to explore the mathematical apparatus of quantum Mechanics to obtain information about the system to be studied. It is considered that the state vectors in the Hilbert space represent not the photon, atomic nucleus, a molecule,..., but the information we have about it.
